This Mother’s Day weekend, enjoy a day of talks on the queen of the hive and more at Olds College in Olds, Alberta.

This United Beekeepers’ event, scheduled for Saturday, May 11, focuses on the mother of all bees, the queen. Maybe your queen is under-performing. Maybe not. Before squishing her and investing all your pocket-change on a new lady, make sure you know how to identify a good queen from a failing one. (Hint: looks aren’t everything!) If you really do need to replace a queen, how do you do it? What’s the secret to finding a bad queen among 30,000 good worker bees? Do you really have to (sigh) kill the old one? What’s the best way to add the new queen? What’s the best queen to add – Russian, or Red-White-and-Blue American? Hygienic or Messy? Gentle or Sassy? Where do you find a spare queen? Should you raise your own? How do you raise queens? And much, much more.
